Backlinks by definition are links on other places on the Internet that points back directly to your website or specific web pages. They are also sometimes referred to as inbound links. A link within your web pages that direct to your own website say, to your home page, is not considered a backlink but an internal link. Website owners can create backlinks by going to other websites, search engines, directories, blogs, and forums and "plant" a link back to your own website.
Experienced web owners realize the importance of quality backlinks in search engine rankings. Some search engine optimization experts say that about 80% of page rank is determined by the volume of links leading to your site. Higher page rank increases your online visibility in search engine results pages each time a user types in keywords in search of product and information.
One of the proven effective ways to generate more backlinks is by submitting your website URL and blog posts to social bookmarking sites. The most high-traffic social media platforms include Digg, StumbleUpon, Delicious, and Reddit. You must perform this task on a regular basis. The sites mentioned are high-indexed in major search engines.
Create links directing to your site with care. One way to avoid being too imposing on other readers is through the use of anchor text. Anchor text is a clickable text that leads to a website. You may insert your anchor texts in blog and website comments, forum profiles, and forum posts. It would also be more beneficial to insert keywords in your anchor text.
Directory submission is a good way to generate inbound links. A popular directory is DMOZ, also known as the Open Directory, is the most reputable directory today. Links to URLs in sites like DMOZ have to be approved by human editors first. It may take a little while before the link you submitted is approved but it will be well worth it.
