http://www.ted.com Psychologist Barry Schwartz takes aim at a central tenet of western societies: freedom of choice. In Schwartz's estimation, choice has made us not freer but more paralyzed, not happier but more dissatisfied. TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers are invited to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes -- including speakers such as Jill Bolte Taylor, Sir Ken Robinson, Hans Rosling, Al Gore and Arthur Benjamin. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, politics and the arts. now I know why religion/marriage/social conformity makes people happier.

I've experienced choice paralysis, but I actually disagree with everything this guy says. You learn to rein in your expectations, shop practically (and develop favorite stores/brands/etc within all that choice) and really relish the things that do turn out to be perfect.

What I find interesting in his blue jeans anaology was that too much choice was not the real issue and not enough choice was. He couldn't choose the jeans he really wanted because either they were not available or the clerk was ignorant of the availability.

I agree that everyone needs a fishbowl what is right about America, choice, and freedom of choice is that I can choose my fishbowl to accomdate me. What is neglected from this one sided diatribe is personal responsabilty, mental disipline and incrementalism. To be happy with choices made regardles of whatever else may be out there and when a better situation comes along, choose to move toward it. There is no utopia, we all must strive to create our own personal utopia without harming others.

don't ever tell me that you need anything! the vast majority of people are grotesque little automata who 'live' their lives and expend their energy in complete reactions. and don't even think about getting me started on america and americans! wake up you fools! to simple living. small is beautiful!

The question is what are our needs? What are our wants? I agree that we can meet our minimum needs through work, however in modern America, most people's wants far outweigh their needs thus we work ourselves to death and have little time to enjoy the possessions we thought we needed. And I agree that one should work to support both:)

very true

moparroadrunner69 says: "Truthfully you do not have to work to live. There is welfare and handouts and charity, etc." Well, ok, I guess I'll amend what I said: SOMEBODY has to work for me to live. I'll add that it seems a bit unfair to expect someone else to labor to support me. Makes me think of Animal Farm ;) If we're as advanced as we believe we are, we should be able to meet our needs with a reasonable MINIMUM amount of work, however.

Truthfully you do not have to work to live. There is welfare and handouts and charity, etc. You work because you want to live a certain way. Work is not in and of itself "bad" or "good". Decide.
